In the performances the dancers enact scenes from the 15th
to the 19th century, each with their own character and style. In renaissance
scenes graceful maidens and slender youths perform elegant bassa danzas
and saltarellos at the 15th century court of Lorenzo de Medici. Self-confident
dancers with the broad-shouldered silhouettes of the proud rulers of the16th
century show their virtuosity in jumps and variations, trying to impress
their partners. The relaxed and exuberant joie de vivre of the Dutch Golden
Age is displayed in 17th century scenes and dances. Baroque dances express
the refined elegance of the Sun King and his entourage: minuet, gigue and
bourrée are brought to life. Finally, there is the 19th century,
with its waltz, polka and galop maniacs taking over the ballrooms of Paris
and Vienna. For the first time in history man and woman could be seen dancing
together, face to face, closely entwined.... |
